A little bit about me
Costina Stan ( b. 1989, Bucharest, Romania), currently living and working in Antwerp, Belgium.
I am a visual artist working primarily with black and white photography and sometimes collage.
My photography practice is an intimate and intuitive journey. I use photography almost as a tool to explore, understand and dissect my own emotions and subconscious. Always intuitive, I try not to question the urge to photograph something, but just do it and allow it to surface.
My main focus is self-portraiture, but I also use the outside world as a mirror - a starting point to evoke memories, feelings, states of being - through landscapes and still lives.
The body itself becomes a landscape, a vessel, a container of emotions. At the limit of embodied and disembodied, sensuality and rigidity, body parts evoke frailty, vulnerability, identity, love and loss.
I feel that what we are drawn to in certain moments of our day, what we see, listen to and how we process that, is very much related to our inner state. Everything is emotional.
In my practice I invite the viewer to reflect not necessarily on my own stories, but to use my images as mirrors for their own emotions, to reflect on the enigmas of existence, on what makes us human, on our collective vulnerabilities, on absence and presence, on what remains as traces of lived experiences.
